2024 Wildwater Racing international teams announced

The Wildwater Racing Committee is pleased to announce the teams for the 2024 international season, following the conclusion of the selection series which took place throughout April.

Athletes raced across two selection weekends, first competing at Holme Pierrepont as part of the ECA Cup, before heading up to Grandtully for the second stage of racing.

The WWR team enjoyed great success over the 2023 season, winning eight medals on the international stage, including six medals at the Junior & U23 World Championships last July.

Team manager, Jamie Christie said:

“This year’s selections have been very competitive, we had the most paddlers registered for selection in a very long time and unfortunately some very good paddlers have not made the teams this year.

“It will be very exciting to see how they get on through this year’s international races and we are hoping to see some GB names hitting the top results.”

Nicky Cresser has broken down the competitions and what to look out for this season.

Junior/U23 European Championships – 3 – 6 July, Dallenwil, Switzerland.

Dallenwil is a small village in the canton of Nidwalden, right in the centre of Switzerland.

Nestled between high mountains and not far from the well-known city of Lucerne, Dallenwil is a real treasure among Swiss villages.

The Engelberger Aa is a mountain river with the water coming right from the Titlis glacier.

Classic is 4.1km on grade 2/3 white water with one weir shoot, the sprint is 350m on grade 2/3

The team will be looking to build on last years success amongst the u23 K1W and C2W with almost all of the team remaining unchanged with Laura Milne ageing out and being replaced with Emma Christie.

Huw Singleton is in his last year of juniors and looking to improve on his 12th place finishes in sprint and classic and Leon Tomlinson has moved up to U23 so will be good to see how he performs in the older age category.

Lots of fresh faces in the juniors and lots of C1’s selected.

Senior World Championships – 14 – 17 August, Sabero, Spain

Racing will take place on the Esla River, which is cold even in summer 6-8 degrees celsius, racing on grade 2/3, classic is 5.8km and sprint is 350m.

K1W team is the same as the U23s so lots of our best athletes will be looking at taking their age category successes onto senior level.

The men’s team has a fair few young faces with Huw and Leon racing at their first senior world championships.

Alex Sheppy has started the season really strongly with two selection wins in the sprint events and his classic racing was solid, Jacob Holmes has been a regular face in the men’s kayak team, but is now also doubling up in c2 with Rob Jefferies.

There are also a significant number of new faces in c1 and c2 and looking to test their skills on a world stage…

Senior World Cup

14-16 June, Veles, North Macedonia

Veles is the sixth largest city in Macedonia and is know as a major rail and road hub within Macedonia

Classic race 2.45km sprint 300m on the Varda River which is generally grade 2 and should see our athletes who cross over into flatwater excel.

20-23 June, Mezzana, Italy

On the Noce River, same location as the 1993 senior world championships. Another cold river with glacial melt. The only venue in this year’s calendar that requires “high” competency to be selected for the British team, so is likely to be the most exciting.
