WWR Academy

wwrdalogo.jpg Development of our sport has been, in recent years a success at the upper and elite level; in both Junior and Senior categories.
However, due essentially to the perennial limit on resources and especially man-power, conversion and progression of the large numbers of new paddlers participating in the Perception Wavehopper Challenge etc. has been less successful.

Because of this constraint even some of the paddlers who do achieve Team level and representative paddling, occasionally come through despite significant skills shortfalls. Excellent paddlers but not the refined article.nene3.jpg

In an effort to address this particular area, and raise awareness of the skills needed to enjoy fully WWR at ALL levels. The Wild Water Racing Development Academy (WWRDA) has been created.

WWRDA is in essence a co-ordinated coaching structure. Designed to introduce and practice the water skills, athletic fitness and lifestyle adjustments needed to improve the quality of racing within WWR and number of participants enjoying the sport.

From the paddlers view this is quite simple. What is less obvious is the anticipated effect on the pool of coaches. Using manageable skills modules delivered at club and group level by existing Coaches. It should provide an inspiration to parents and other helpers to begin 'Coaching'. Given the confidence and ability to become more involved. And when ready can be offered to the BCU schemes for recognition and qualification.

Naturally to be fully integrated with the BCU Coaching structure covering all disciplines of Canoe/Kayak, the WWRDA Skills modules need to be neatly dovetailed with the proposed new BCU coaching process. This compatibility is sought.

As modular structure, it will be easily and completely transportable to new Clubs and even individuals. Measuring and monitoring of paddler progression, especially for youngsters (and Parents) will be via an informative, fun Academy log book. (A version for coaches will also be available. A basic river race course suitability guide and new WWR technical handbook will also soon be available. Probably on line)

Other innovations include alterations to race day timings to promote training and increase water time. This in conjunction with a national calendar review in 2007. Aimed at regionalising the early stages of National Youth championships etc in 2008.

So in summary. An easy to pick up structure to expand the WWR message. Aid existing, inspire and enable new Coaches. Suggest goals for, and measure progress of youngsters. Feeding into, not just WWR but compatible with other disciplines of paddling and BCU coaching. Making our sport more accessible.

Whilst not addressing all the development needs immediately; eventually as it grows, a comprehensive development shift will occur. Fully utilising the small but effective network of expert regional Coaches to grow the sport.
