Wow - what a rollercoaster of an event. The team worked fantastically together to push for the best performances. It was a championships of 1sts: - 1st time since 1975 we had 2 medals in a single category
- 1st time since 1975 we have won a world championships
- 1st time since 1989 that we have had individual medalists
- 1st time ever we have won an individual class
- 1st time since 1981 that we had 2 mens kayaks in the top 10
- 1st time since 1995 we have challenged for a medal in C2 team (so close!)
The GB team proved it was able to paddle both tough and easy water and still be competitive. It is a great credit to the whole teams preparation and commitment. |

Sprint day. After the 1st run, Jessica led Hannah by 0.05 seconds. At the end she led by 0.54 seconds to become the first ever GB individual World Champion. It was a GB 1-2. The anthem was sung, tears were shed. Let us not forget that Jonnie Schofield came 4th, Ben Oakley 9th, Sandra 8th. All awesome performances. What a great year. What a great championships for us. Even though half the time it is an individual race, it truly is a team sport. We cannot thank enough the excellent event coaching team with us here Alan, Neil, Phil and Jon. Legends all of them. I'm getting all emotional again now, time to sign off, xx. |

   | A long day was planned. New courses to learn, sprint and classic team races to run. The new classic course was about 10 minutes long with some good rough water and certainly rougher than the last 2 World Championship courses. First up was the Sprint Team event with runs starting at 1000 and 1200, the girls claimed the bronze medal. C2 were 6th, MK1 9th. After the Sprint teams, the Masters events were run, Colin Smith and Brian McNulty retained their C2 Master B title and Dee Paterson claimed Silver in the WK1 event. The GB team were ready and well warmed up for the classic team race late in the afternoon. Sandra Hyslop led Hannah Brown and Jessica Oughton down the course as the last team to set off, a position earned based on the combined times of the three athletes from the individual classic race. This gives the perfect timing split opportunity and at approximately half way Neil Stamps repeatedly shouted a "1 up" split. These two words served to catapult Sandra forwards even faster towards the finish, with Hannah and Jessica pulling up hard as the finish line approached to ensure a perfect blanket finish. An "extremely animated" Phil Caunt on the finish line watched the girls come in 2.6 seconds ahead of the French team to claim the Gold Medal. It is 35 years since the National Anthem has been sung at a World Championships and sing it we did. In the C2 race, a change of start tactics meant that Wright and Christie were to lead the team down, the strategy being to charge the best lines as the others hung on behind. It worked brilliantly but in the end was not quite enough to secure a podium finish, 4th place, 0.8secs behind the Slovaks. | |

Day 5 - Groundhog Day Plan B |

The feedback from the 0900 Team Leaders meeting was quite clear. "There will be no racing today. We are developing an alternative plan. We will meet again at 1545 to review the next steps." So there has been another opportunity to learn how to rest.
Peter Keron took a ride on his bicycle up the valley, he was set the mission to find some snow and bring it back still frozen but this did not transpire. He went to the race start and back. Others were less energetic, a few movies (Kill Bill, Date Night, Pineapple Express) have been watched, some "work down the wire" has been achieved and a few international rounds of the "name game" filled at least an hour or so. The coffee bar crawl was a popular event but in the end resulted in only one venue visited.
So now we have Plan B. The courses have been changed to run from below the town of Sort. The river is still very high and whilst the courses appear straight forward with no difficult manoevers to make, good rough water athleticism is required to perform well. The river is wide, fast flowing with many surging waves. The news of this change filtered out to all the teams at 1730, this meant that about 150 paddlers were all trying to practise the new course at exactly that time. It was busy. So the Team Sprint runs will go at 1000 and 1200hrs. The Team Classic will start at 1600. Masters classic will run before the Classic Team.
Unfortunately Hannah is sick and Tim has become injured, possibly the delay will ensure recovery can be made, but tomorrow will be a very busy day, 3 race runs to do. We're an adaptable bunch and mentally tough so expect to handle it enthusiastically.
In amongst all the turmoil there is one with some foresight (and an overly long slightly greying head of hair). Team Manager Christie has highlighted the packing plans as an early departure is needed on Monday morning. Crikey, that seems a long way away but he has a point, make sure your kit gets into the correct vehicle. |

The feedback from the 0900 Team Leaders meeting was quite clear. “There will be no racing today. We do not know what the plan will be. We will meet again at 1700 to review the next steps.” In reality it is a welcome break a day ahead of schedule, particularly for the coaches who have been working tirelessly with all the paddlers on aquatic and pshycological matters during race preparation. As athletes started to rest up and prepare inwardly for racing the coaches efforts were doubled as they intensely devised split taking strategies and logistics plans. Then they sat on the river bank during all the racing, waiting patiently until the pick vehicle up arrived. In the rain.
And then there is the emotional attachment to the athletes, the individuals, the personalities and the event itself. Competing in the races is more than just a physical act, it is an emotionally charged endeavour that everyone on the trip is absorbed in, and each one externalises in a different way. The experienced support keep a lid on it with aplomb, a week or two away from work it is, a holiday it is not.
So today some went to the lake to enjoy some sun and light easy paddling, others caught up on e-mail and generally relaxed all day. Everyone took a trip upstream to see the water and almost all said “I’d paddle it…”…. but of course no-one did. The start car park is flooded and the Germans had to have a paddle over the area just to say they did, the tents are still there but the Portaloos are not, they have been washed away and are wedged in the trees that line the river bank at the start area, a pity really, it would have been fun to watch them negotiate the race course, imagine the type of comments that arose out of this idea from a group of “young men” with active imaginations and time to spare.
This evening saw the individual races medal ceremonies in the sports hall and Team GB got the opportunity to make lots of noise when Hannah and Jessica stepped up onto the podium. The flags were hoisted aloft on a basketball hoop frame, the anthems rung out enthusiastically from the PA system and Alan shed a tear. Shear joy. Minor amusement occurred when it appears that the organisers did not have enough Slovakia flags and they took one from the static flag rack during a not uncommon extended pause in proceedings.
The ever positive Alan went on to congratulate the athletes on an a “rest day well taken” and outline the plan for tomorrow. Team racing starts at 1415hrs. (CET.) A water level update will be communicated to the teams at 0900. |

| | The last time Team GB won two medals within a class was 1975. Then it was WK1 and this year that feat has been repeated by Hannah and Jessica with their respective Silver and Bronze medals. The last time two individual medals were won at a championship was 1989. Fantastic performances. Much respect. Rain. Rain. Rain. Up. Up. Up. They held back the water as long as possible but the text message sent to the team leaders at about 1430 summed up the situation; "We inform you that after 16hrs there will be 40m3 more of water a consequence of opening barrage...." 16hrs was 20 minutes after racing was due to finish, good job no re-runs were required. Race level is about 50m3, at 2000hrs the flow is around 160m3. Today for the WK1 and C2 classes adjustments were made to the practise schedule to try and ensure a run down the river as close as possible to the race level under the rising conditions. Changes were made to race routes to accommodate the changes in level and then it was all about the execution in water conditions no-one expected racing to be done in. Bravado got the better of the testosterone levels in the C2 room at lunch time and only Goulding & Harrison braved the risky left hand route down the "Woodyard Rapid"..."it was like Alton Towers without a seatbelt, we had to keep our arms and legs inside the vehicle", they were quoted as saying afterwards. 0900 Thursday for a review of the water conditions and racing instructions for the team racing. The Girls are ranked 1st, C2's 4th and the Men 10th. | |

Races today were C1, MK1 and Ladies C1. The drama for Team GB had started well before racing. Ben's buoyancy aid had failed scrutineering, it had the floatation of a brick, but at 1000hrs no replacement had arrived and emergency scrutineering was closed. C2 front man and all round good chap Simon Goulding loaned him a suitable garment and all of a sudden we were praising the organisers for running the individual races over 2 days. However, when, at only 1 hour before the MK1 race start the bus, Pete Keron and Ben Oakley were spotted outside the accommodation alarms bells started to ring. Lots of chin scratching and pointing indicated a large split in the back hull of Bens boat. During final practise he had "tapped" his back end in the rapid called "slapper"........ an uncharacteristic minor error but potentially Titanic. This was to become Dave Kelly's finest moment with 20 minute epoxy. "Sort"ed. It seems to have been missed by most observers that PK had returned to collect a cag-deck.
Ben's race was also not without incident. Matty Harrison had outdone the Swiss in the cowbell stakes and whilst banging his little heart out on the metallic donger his jaw dropped as Ben made a text book upstream manoeuvre under the frantic GB fans. "It just wasn't working today" he said. Pete Keron was pleased with his race, appearing slightly bemused at the finish, as though the whole thing had given an unpredicted positive effect on his well-being. He is already engrossed in the Kick The Waves web site, could this be a new boat ahead of 2 years time for Bourg? Let's hope so. (Is a boat build quality review from Ben required?) During the afternoon a strong headwind had developed, possibly Tomas Slovak had predicted this as his early start position and race time meant he held the lead for 45 minutes (remember Gickler in 93?) before Ronan Tastard bettered it. The Czecks held on to 6th, 7th and 8th, ominous for the team racing. (They must have had a hangover)
Michael was also happy with his performance, no real drama to report, except a good charge at the main wood-yard stopper wave, it's on video (apparently) Loich Vynisale, 1st place, panicked at boat weighing and threw a rock into his boat. This only served to arouse the suspicions of the boat checkers who meticulously dried out his boat and checked for loose items before confirming that it was legal.
Matthew French was gutted to be the 4th Australian to finish, hence no team race for him, this feeling did not last long.... ... free beers at the finish if you are accredited.
Sandra and Jessica have ear to ear grins and appear to be gradually getting more and more excited, we hope they sleep well and carry the grins into tomorrow. It appears that the C2 of Bradburn and Cartwright are also building their own excitement as they enthusiastically rub down the hull of their boat.
Hannah's guns are still the envy of all the boys though she continues to refuse the challenge to bench press a 70kg man. Possibly on Friday?
This evenings task: - consume significant volumes of carbohydrate, anyone eating more than Hannah gets a prize. |

Day 1 - Practise and Openings |

The Noguera Pallaresa river has been running high after a winter with plenty of snow and rain. We are, however, assured of stable water levels during theracing but the temptation to check the water flow web sites every couple ofhours remains. The classic course is rough with numerous challenging sections and many boats haveparted company with their paddlers during training. Team GB has mastered thewater and really got down to focussing on race strategy. The same cannot besaid for all teams as it seems to be an hourly occurrence that a boat bobs paston its own.
The opening ceremony started with the usual parade though the town, speeches of"mastering the water" from the local dignitries and then the competition wasformally opened by Mr Richard Fox (the 2nd Vice President of the ICF...how mayare there?). Then a show of local cultural dancing and music followed, (thekind of thing the edge of you seat was made for) and the most energetic wassaved until last when 8 leotard clad dancers livened things up and perked upthe crowd with a fine display of flexibility and agility on the stage, all tothe sound of "Fame", the theme tune from the 80's TV show. It seems the wholetown came to watch, a sign that the relatively small community is totallyinvolved in this event.
The accommodation is right in the middle of town overlooking the sprint course andalso in the building are the French, Belgians, Australians and Swiss so muchinternational liason is possible (and probable?) Fortunately there is WIFI inthe hotel that is able to cope with all the laptops connecting to the InterWeb...how else would we "Facebook" the person sat next to us... The pool is welcometoo.
All the team is here, boats are polished, weighed and adjusted, now it's time to knuckle down to the business of racing.

Peak UK Recommended sizes |
|
Senior Documentation
|
|
Peak are ordering in some new sizes of deck to fit a wider range of paddlers. The original deck which some of you may have tried was 32", they are also ordering 34" and 36". Any top can be matched with any deck. To determine the correct size - measure your torso at the height of the cockpit (note this often is not near your waist!) - and then take the next size bigger. You then need to determine how long in the body you want the deck - measure from the deck to your shoulders. Err on the side of length as you can always put elastic braces in to take up any slack and still allow rotation (images to show example of this to follow).

Tasmania World Cup
|
Tomas Zastera has an offer for paddlers intending to go to Tasmania for
the World Cups with regards the transport of boats. Anyone wishing to
order boats from him, ZASTERA or ZBSPORT for this competition he is
sending a container to Tasmainia for this purpose direct from Czech
from his factory. Boats can also be included in the container if
ordered from ZBSPORT as he is working with them on this also.
He has space for 20 to 22 boats in a container and has a few orders
already, so anyone wishing to avail themselves of this facility please
contact Tomas ASAP. The price is about 100 to 150 euros. He would
appreciate an early response as he had a few orders and the earlier he
can start organising a container the cheaper it will be and first come
first served.
Any requests please include with your order or contact him prior via his website.

This is the helmet cam footage from the first run on the Adda river, Sondrio Italy. This is the course which the juniors raced last year, and will be the second half of the seniors course. The additional 8 mins above the course is as tough, if not tougher that the first couple of minutes of the footage.
The first 90 seconds, to just below the bridge is the sprint course that will be used for the seniors.
